Adaptive Technology

Software

  • Screen Readers
JAWS is a screen reader, a software program for visually impaired users. Its purpose is to make personal computers using Microsoft Windows accessible to blind and visually impaired users. It accomplishes this by providing the user with access to the information displayed on the screen via text-to-speech or by means of Braille display and allows for more comprehensive keyboard interaction with the computer.
  • Text-to-Speech Software
Kurzweil 1000 is a package which enables a visually impaired user to gain access to both electronic and printed material by speaking aloud text which has been scanned or copied. It combines accessibility, communication and productivity tools to ease and enhance their reading, writing and learning experience.Kurzweil 3000 is a tiered assistive reading, writing and learning software solution for any struggling reader, including individuals with learning disabilities. This software is also helpful for students with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and English Language Learners.
  • Speech-to-Text Software
Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional 9 is speech-to-text software that enables users to talk to the computer instead of typing. The advantage of this is that the average person talks at around 120 words per minute, but only types 40 words per minute. This allows the user to complete documents up to three times faster than they would by typing alone. After training, Dragon NaturallySpeaking boasts a 99% speech accuracy.
  • Screen Magnifiers
ZoomText is a screen magnifier with a built-in screen reader. It also has options to customize the monitor’s color scheme and mouse pointers to best suit the user.
